The town of Grand Ridge, named after its sister city in Illinois, once had a place called Lover’s Lane, located near a drive-in movie theater.

The railroad also played an important role in Grand Ridge’s history. A variety of products were shipped by rail including syrup for sugar cane during the 1930s.

“That was good stuff; you could eat it off the table,” a local historian and long-time postmaster said.

Both places are gone now, and so is the role of the railroad, but Grand Ridge still has its share of sites worth seeing. The John Thomas Porter Recreational Complex has been the site of dozens of state baseball tournaments. City leaders have also rolled out plans to renovate and expand some of the town’s parks. Johnson Park, named after Ducky Johnson, will be extended out to the northwest in the future. It will include new baseball and softball fields, a walking track and a football/soccer field.

“So we are very invested in our mission to have recreation for all ages, right up to our seniors,” said the city manager.

Grand Ridge is also home to Ocheesee Pond, which has some of the best brim fishing in the state. City leaders are working to preserve areas of the pond.

“A lot of people come down from Georgia and Alabama just to fish,” the city manager said. “We’d really like to see [the pond] left intact and preserved because it is very important to us,” he said.
